The Norwegian Music Therapy Association (NMTA)

NMTA was established in 1972. The primary goal of this association is to promote the understanding of music therapy and the establishment of music therapy practice in Norway. NMTA co-operates with different music-organisations to achieve a better musical offer for people with special needs.

NMTA has been a member of the Council for Music Organisations in Norway since 1981. This gives us the right to financial support from the Government and subsidy for courses. The association has its own course comity that arranges courses both for the members of the association, and for other disciplines and interest groups. In addition to this, we arrange conferences and have been responsible for several projects.

NMTA has its own periodical with an editorial staff. The periodical "Musikkterapi" has 4 publications a year and contains music therapy articles and essays, information, interviews, book-reviews etc.

NMTA has about 380 members. Besides music therapists and music therapy students, the members represent a broad spectrum of disciplines: special pedagogues, music workers, teachers, psychologists, doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, social workers etc., and occupational groups within different types of organised musical and cultural offers. In addition to this, about 150 schools, libraries and institutions subscribe to the periodical.
